New words this week : 9,949 words which is a little surprising. I thought it was going to be another slow week, and I guess it was not!

WIPs worked on this week : 2, with 1 new WIP

I thought this was going to be another week with lower wordcount because I did not feel like I had much writing time, thought looking back I did have one big day (2.4k) that I think helped boost my total quite a bit. I'm so blindingly exhausted that my memory is garbage right now.

The Old Guard

food truck au : 7,611 words which brings the total to 133,418 words and we're still going on the smut. I originally had it planned as a single chapter and figured it'd be on the longer side, but it would still be fine to post as one. We're at 22.5k and I think I've got another 1-2k to finish it off. Whew. ALSO. I think I finally have a title for it, which I have been worrying about because I usually have a title by this point.

au of food truck au : 2,511 words which brings the total to 2,511 words and it's inspired by something from food truck au that I really want to write and doesn't fit in that fic. So, I've just been throwing words at it in a separate doc, first to try to get it out of my head, and then because I think (and my beta agreed!) that it might be fun to post as a little "extra" for food truck au. The way it's written now is shaping up to be a whole new fic of its own, which I do not want to write, but I think that I am going to reshape it as a pwp so that'll keep the wordcount fairly constrained.

Happy Wednesday!

I'm taking search offline sometime today to upgrade the server to a new instance type. It should be down for a day or so -- sorry for the inconvenience. If you're curious, the existing search machine is over 10 years old and was starting to accumulate a decade of cruft...!

Also, apparently these older machines cost more than twice what the newer ones cost, on top of being slower. Trying to save a bit of maintenance and cost, and hopefully a Wednesday is okay!

Edited: The other cool thing is that this also means that the search index will be effectively realtime afterwards... no more waiting a few minutes for the indexer to catch new content.

For my birthday, Husband bought me a furniture cleaner. And before you all go, "oh gosh, what a clueless man!" let me just assure you all, he is far from clueless and I wanted one. I have in fact been casting long glances and coveting for at least the last six months. So I am HAPPY!

It's one of those things where I want it and I can easily afford it, but it is also expensive enough and specialised enough that I have a great deal of trouble convincing myself that yes, I am in fact allowed to buy one. So I don't. Husband to the rescue.

I have tried it out on a chair. The used water was... opaque. It was WILD! I want to wash the sofa, but I will control myself and wait until tomorrow morning, because it does require a bit of drying time afterwards and we want to be able to sit in it tonight. I'm worried about what the water is going to look like after that.

This is going to be so useful! I can wash our mattress!

New words this week : 7,448 words which is up a little from last week. Writing is still a struggle, but I think I'm getting back on track.

WIPs worked on this week : 1, with no new WIPs (yay!)

And I managed to keep my focus to a single fic. Life is still full of nonsense, I'm still exhausted, but at least the words are coming a little easier than they have been recently. I'll take the win.

The Old Guard

food truck au : 7,448 words which brings the total to 126,207 words and the first half of the smutty chapter is written! I think it's probably going to be it's own chapter, because it's 12k, but I want to write chapters 11 and 12 entirely before I make a final decision on where to break them up. I hope it'll work okay as three chapters. I'm once again worrying over how long this fucking thing is going to end up being.

The case of the missing notifications

I keep forgetting to post about this: we've been troubleshooting the "missing notifications" problem for the past few days. (Well, I say "we", really I mean Mark and Robby; I'm just the amanuensis.) It's been one of those annoying loops of "find a logical explanation for what could be causing the problem, fix that thing, observe that the problem gets better for some people but doesn't go away completely, go back to step one and start again", sigh.

Mark is hauling out the heavy debugging ordinance to try to find the root cause. Once he's done building all the extra logging tools he needs, he'll comment to this entry. After he does, if you find a comment that should have gone to your inbox and sent an email notification but didn't, leave him a link to the comment that should have sent the notification, as long as the comment itself was made after Mark says he's collecting them. (I'd wait and post this after he gets the debug code in but I need to go to sleep and he's not sure how long it will take!)

We're sorry about the hassle! Irregular/sporadic issues like this are really hard to troubleshoot because it's impossible to know if they're fixed or if they're just not happening while you're looking. With luck, this will give us enough information to figure out the root cause for real this time.

This is an ~30-minute episode of a Vox podcast called “Today Explained.” There is a transcript.

”How fan fiction went mainstream: The community that underpins Heated Rivalry, explained” by Danielle Hewitt and Noel King

It’s a pretty good intro to fanfic and how it’s become something publishers and creators of TV/movies pay attention to. They interview Francesca Kappa, a co-founder of the Organization for Transformative Works, which created AO3.

Things I learned and some bits I liked:
  • AO3 was created in part to prevent commodification of fanfiction and the social connections it facilitates.
  • “one of the projects that I worked on in the early days of the OTW organization for transformative works was that we were being contacted by women in their 70s and 80s who were like having to move in with their kids or going into nursing homes and they had like 3,000 fan fiction zines.”
  • It was claimed that AO3 is “much bigger than Wikipedia.” I’m not sure what metrics they’re using to come up with that.
  • [AO3 is] “structurally unenshittifiable” because “we don’t have customers and we’re not a business.”
  • (Discussing copyright) “it would have been terrible if Shakespeare had to, like, negotiate with Netflix for the right to Hamlet and then didn't get it. Like, that's the world we live in, right? We're like, Netflix owns Hamlet, it has a five-year option, Shakespeare really has a great idea for it, but like, no, I'm really sorry because JJ. Abrams is going to do Hamlet.”
(I need to know which circle of Hell shows JJ Abrams’s Hamlet on repeat, because I really want to avoid it.)
