Marcelo (The guy I would love to introduce [livejournal.com profile] wittgensteinian) spend an aprenteship in Brazil last year, as his subject is Human Geography, he meet a lot of amazing people. One of his friends study the pharmacological roberies lead by the self called first world countries. Big companies makes deals with Brazilian, or other countries, and decided to "save" a geographical zone, creating parks. Then they send sociologist, antropologists and linguistics researcher to live among native comunities that live in the park. They research about medical plants in the natives cosmovision. Then pick the seeds, make them grow in their labs and (I miss the exact word here) they do a royalty. So the plant is theirs , no money for the poor country.
In Chile we have a very beautifull flower call Astromelia, dutches stole it, take the royalty, and now if we want to make deals with it WE NEED TO PAY. We have a gringo, playing envioromentalist (you bet), that had bought a nauseating amount of earth at the south of Chile, we suspect he could be doing something like that.
Bless "free" market for make poorer the poorest.

[livejournal.com profile] autumnmyst I Translated from Portuguese something you could discuss in your classes. My Portuguese is worst than my english, and I use electronic dictionary. Not the best of translations.
